A Spector 360 Dashboard Events Window is more than a list of details – it’s a window into ALL data within the given criteria. The power of the Events Window lies in its flexibility of Data Grouping (the Navigate tree structure), the Summary, and the ability to export information for use in other programs.

Take Web Sites Visited (in Data Explorer) as an example. The default Data Grouping shows User > Date > Domain > Host. You may notice domains such as Facebook and CNN under certain users, but suppose you need a complete log and report of ALL activity at these sites.

Here’s how to change the view in a few clicks:

1. Click the Grouping button on the Navigate toolbar to open the Event Data Grouping window.

2. The left column in this window shows available groups, and the right column shows the groups used in the current data hierarchy. If you drag Domain above User, and then drag all other groups to the left column (to be hidden), the grouping will now be Domain > User. Click OK.

The resulting data arrangement makes it easier for you to click through each domain to review the users and time spent at the sites. Totals at the bottom of the Summary pane are for ALL users in the criteria selection.

To report activity at Facebook, for example:

Select Facebook in the Navigate pane to display a Summary of Users, the next group down in the hierarchy.

Click Export on the Summary toolbar and create an XML, Excel, HTML, or Text file that includes all the numbers, including totals, as you see them in the Summary.

With another few clicks, you can create a log for CNN activity. Once you start experimenting, you’ll see that Data Grouping opens up hundreds of possibilities for focusing your review of Dashboard summaries.

Modifying your top-down view can offer new revelations about an employee’s computer behavior. The Spector CNE Viewer shows a user’s activities under Online Searches, Web Sites Visited, Files Transferred, Keystrokes Typed, Program Activity, User Activity, Document Tracking and Keywords Detected in a “hierarchical” tree arrangement. The hierarchy of this tree is set by a default “data grouping.” When you’re viewing large amounts of data, if you want to understand quickly what’s going on, or if you need a specific report, you may want to change the data grouping.

Select the Group by > Arrange Custom Grouping from the Viewer toolbar.

In the left column of the Arrange Custom Grouping window, you immediately see the “groups” not used in the current hierarchy. Move groups you want to see (Show) from the left column to right. Move groups that you don’t need to see (Hide) from right to left. Use the Move Up/Move Down buttons to set the hierarchy of Currently Displayed groups.

Suppose you’re monitoring web site activity. Web Sites Visited records are initially arranged by Date > Domain > Subdomain. You can see at first glance the domains the user has visited on any day, but the domain and subdomain names may mean nothing to you. By adding Title directly under Domain and removing the other groups, you’ll immediately see web page names and have a better idea of the purpose of the visit.

When you change the grouping, you also change the Summary and Details displayed in the lower pane. This creates new possibilities for printing and exporting reports. For example, in the above custom grouping, selecting CNN.com would give you a Summary view of visits the user made to just CNN on ALL dates (currently loaded into the Viewer). You could export the Summary data for inclusion in a report on each user’s visits to CNN.

Corporate-wide monitoring lets you assess which programs are used most by employees, so you can license and renew only the most worthwhile applications. The Spector 360 Dashboard includes several ready-made charts and reports to keep you apprised of application usage, including:

Applications Launched Most Frequently

Applications Where Users Spend the Most Time

Programs Receiving the Most Keystrokes Typed

Trend of Program Usage

Following are three tips for customizing a set of Application Metering charts:

1) Adjust Criteria to show only usage of one expensive, licensed software package. For example, copy the Trend of Program Usage chart and adjust the new chart’s criteria to include only “BigProgramX” (Criteria » Event Criteria » Include Specific Programs). You can see at a glance how often the program is being launched or how many hours of active time any user has spent on this program.

2) Create Program Groups to get a wider view of application usage. Because Spector 360 can detect each and every instance — by version or major release — of any application started and used, you might improve charts by grouping applications. For example, you could group all the detected programs within Microsoft Office 2007 into one group and Microsoft Office 2003 into another group. To do this, use Management » Program Groups in the Dashboard.

3) To track usage of web-based applications or services, such as SalesForce.com, adjust the chart’s event criteria to include a search in the Window Caption.

The Spector CNE Control Center provides a Computer Batch installation wizard that enables you to upgrade and/or install the Spector CNE Recorder to any or all network computers at once. Make sure the computers you wish to install on are “detected” in the Control Center computer list before starting.

In the Control Center, right-click Manage Computers (or open the Action menu) and select All Tasks > Computer Batch Install Wizard.

Select computers in the left “Computers in View” column. Use Ctrl and Shift to multiple-select. Click Add to move the selected computers to the “Computers to Install to” list on the right… When the installation list is complete, click OK.

If the Recorder has already been installed on any of the computers, a message asks if you would like to reinstall on those computers. Choose Yes to install and/or reinstall on ALL computers in the list.

Select a Spector Deployment (.sds) file to use for installation and click Open. The default file is spsetup_Settings.sds.

NOTE: You can use the Deployment Utility to “build” and deploy different .sds files with different record settings to different “batches” of computers.

Choose to install the Spector Recorder immediately, or set an installation schedule. ALL computers in the list will follow the same schedule for installation. Click OK to continue.

Finally, enter Domain Administrator or equivalent credentials to execute the installation at these computers. Check Remember Credentials for this Session to reuse the credentials for each computer.

Each computer will restart after the installation task has been performed, and the Spector Recorder will begin recording and sending activity to the Spector CNE Data Vault.
