Automatic Space Management in Spector CNE Investigator

By default, Spector CNE Investigator stores user (or computer) activity for 30 days and then discards it to avoid using up space on the Data Vault computer.  It’s possible to increase the amount of activity stored and at the same time avoid disk space problems. By setting up “archiving,” you can store and access recorded activity for past months or even years.

To set up automatic archiving:

1. On the same Data Vault Properties panel, click the Archiving button to display the Data Vault Archiving dialog box.
2. Select the checkbox options.
   

   Archive Data - Turns on archiving.
   Archive to Unique Folders - Creates separate date and time-stamped folder for each archive.
   Purge Original Data - Deletes the data from the active Data Vault after copying to the archive location for a true “archive” procedure.

3. Set a frequency, time, and day of month for the archive.
4. Set the “age” of the data to archive. For example, if you enter 30, the scheduled archive will copy (and “purge”) only the data in the Data Vault more than 30 days old. A value of 0 (zero) archives all data.
5. Set a destination folder for your archives.
   Click Browse. If you select a remote location (not on the local Data Vault computer), you are prompted to change the Data Vault credentials to allow access for archiving on the remote computer. As long as the Data Vault has Administrator-level access to both the Data Vault computer and the archive folder destination, and as long as both computers are up and running at the time the archive is scheduled, the archive will be delivered to the specified location.
6. Click OK on the Data Vault Archiving box and on the Data Vault Properties box to save your changes.

Now, older Spector CNE Investigator data will be automatically archived to a storage location and purged from the current Data Vault. To allow users access to the archives, you can set up Windows “shares.” Spector CNE Investigator users with the appropriate folder-sharing privileges on the archive computer will be able to load activity for past months, or even years, into their Spector CNE Investigator Viewers.
